What is a Rivet and How Do They Work?

A rivet is a mechanical fastener with a head at one end and the other end hammered into the head after insertion. Riveting is the process of joining sheet metal parts permanently together. Simply put, the function of a rivet is similar to that of a nut and bolt. However, a rivet can’t be easily unscrewed and instead of two separate pieces, a rivet is just a single piece with both of its end holding each piece of metal.

There are three main types of riveting machinery: compression riveting, non-impact riveting (also known as orbital and radial riveting), and impact riveting. The differences between each method in a nutshell: non-impact, radial riveting forms the head of the rivet by performing a spinning or rolling action to the top of the stem, while impact riveting forms the head by impacting the top of the stem using hammers or punches. Compression riveting forms the head of the rivet by squeezing or pulling the rivet stem.

Finally, we will be concentrating on non-impact riveting, because compared to impact and compression riveting non-impact riveting is in most cases more energy efficient, controllable and secure. Radial riveting for example is the best choice for high-quality joints. It is often used with small and delicate parts and materials. In radial riveting the friction between the tool and the workpiece is minimum, which results in excellent surface structure. Because of low workpiece loading, even ceramic parts can be riveted.
